County Sheriff Threatens To Have Family Dog Put Down

The sheer cruelty and inhumanity of the evictions process that is sweeping the country has been brought into sharp focus by a letter sent by a County Sheriff, informing a home-owner that the occupants of the home would be evicted in the next fortnight, and threatening to have their much loved dog put down also.
 .
The letter from Padraig Burke, who is the Kerry County Registrar and Sheriff, said, “I understand from my court messenger Mr Ulick Devane, that you may have a dog on the lands the subject matter of the Order. Please ensure that all animals have been removed from the land by 11am on the 8th June 2016. If they are not removed I will be required to have them removed from the property and delivered to the nearest pound–which is in Tralee for Dogs–for collection by the owners therof or destruction under the relevant legislation relating to the operation of the said pound.”
 .
The Hub-Ireland, a group campaigning for an immediate suspension of all evictions, has condemned the cruelty to both humans and animals in this case. “Turfing people out like this is sub-human, even evil,” said Byron Jenkins, of The Hub-Ireland, on a recent visit to Leinster House to meet with politicians about the looming evictions crisis. Now that the General Election is over, it is anticipated that a tsunami of such evictions is commencing, with 100,000 families now at risk.

clare champion corofinOnly last week, in Corofin, Co. Clare, five men wearing balaclavas, with the appearance of paramilitaries, turned up at a home and attempted to carry out an eviction during a terrifying, intimidating ordeal and without the correct paperwork from the court (see video below recorded by the Anti Eviction Taskforce). It was all the more menacing because they refused to identify themselves and were driving a car with the number plate blacked out. The picture here shows the front page of this week’s Clare People which reported the story.
 .
The Hub-Ireland is also calling for the immediate repeal of the controversial “Evictions Act” introduced by the last government, which is enabling fast-and-easy eviction orders to be obtained by banks against home-owners in mortgage-distress.
 .
“This cruelty has to stop,” said Mr Jenkins, “we are appealing to the compassion of Irish people and ask them to support our campaign in any way they can and to contact their TDs to bring an end to the misery being suffered by so many in the Evictions Courts.”
