Letter Re Leader’s Debates and Climate Change

Letter to Editor

Sir,

In all the televised debates to date with leaders of the mainstream parties, the issue of climate change and its impact the environment and society has not been addressed by any of the candidates or raised by the interviewers.

Climate change is real, it is happening now, and it is having a detrimental impact on the entire planet, including here in Ireland. While the economy is understandably taking precedence in all the public discourse, climate change has the potential to destroy economies all over the world and to damage our own fragile recovery.

For the past thirty years the mainstream political parties have ignored climate change, hoping it would go away. Now that they acknowledge it, they still only see the threat, and not the opportunities, and seem motionless, dazed by the headlights of oncoming change.

Ireland can lead the way in climate solutions. We have an abundance of the natural resources needed to live sustainably. Agricultural land for food and forestry, sufficient water, untapped opportunities for solar generated electrical energy, seas that can be harnessed for food and energy, and a people willing to get involved and take action with just the slightest of incentives.

Why in Ireland do the people lead and the politicians follow? That is not how it should be, especially since the time for action is now.

Yours, etc,

Dr. Alan Moore, Sladagh, Fethard, Co Tipperary
