The members of North Tipperary Macra had the honour of attending one of the final garden parties held at Arás an Uachtarán by President and Senator McAleese on July 7th. The theme of the gathering was the importance of community and eight members of North Tipp Macra were invited to attend as representatives of rural youth. The invite also coincided with the annual ESB Electric Ireland Know Your Neighbour weekend – Macra’s centre piece of community involvement.
The guests were firstly formally introduced to President and Senator McAleese before refreshments were served. With glorious weather, there was a chance to view the grounds also. The President then addressed the guests and spoke about the value of community and building strong links within local communities. She praised the many groups present, who ranged from youth groups to graveyard committees to carers in respite centres and the invaluable part they have to play. Entertainment was then provided by choirs, singers and musicians from around the country, with RTE’s Mary Kenny as MC for the day. The visit concluded with a guided tour of the house.
The eight members who attended represented Macra clubs from all over North Tipperary including Aglish, Clodagh, Devil’s Bit, Moyne and Nenagh.
