Claiming Our Future Tipperary Citizens Forum in Nenagh

Claiming our Future Tipperary is organising a CitizensForum in Nenagh. May 14th 1.45-5pm. Keeping the focus on political reform. See for full details. All Welcome. Book Early.

In the General Election 2011, promises of reform were made by all parties.
One element of that reform should give citizens a stronger voice in the day to day business of government, for example having the right to recall officials who don’t do their jobs, giving greater involvement to citizens in making budgets and policy, have rights of petition.

The main part of this afternoon event will feature discussion and debate in small groups. The event will be introduced by local elected representatives and high profile experts on citizen-led democracy:

Dr. Clodagh Harris, from University College Cork will give a brief talk on “International examples of Citizen Participation in Local Government”.

Dr. Peadar Kirby, University of Limerick will talk on “Towards the 2nd Republic – Politics after the Celtic Tiger”

Other speakers include Phyl Bugler (FG) (giving A councillor’s perspective on local government) and Viriginia O’Dowd (Labour) summarising the current picture of citizen involvement in local government.

Registration will take place at 1.45pm on Saturday May 14th and Mayor of Nenagh, Seamus Morris, will open the event at 2pm.

All interested people are invited to attend. People are asked to ring or email before hand to confirm attendance.
