‘Wooly Nest’ Felting Exhibition At Clonmel Library Is One Not To Miss
Due to the recent harsh weather conditions the Woolly Nest exhibition at Clonmel Library has been extended from its original end date of the 18th of January and will now end on the 25th of January. The exhibition features work done by artist Gráinne Zannis and her three children and showcases the unique art form of felting.
There are many different ways to create art from felt using different felting techniques. Needle Felting involves using a specialised type of needle to turn wool fibres into a piece of fabric. The wool is continuously prodded with a barbed needle, and this causes the fibres to become knotted together creating one piece of fabric. By prodding the wool in different directions, shapes and figures can be made from the wool.
Wet Felting is another technique used to create flat 2D images. Wet felting is completed by wetting the fibres with soap and water. This causes the fibres to open and stick together creating one large piece of material. An image can then be made using layers of wool.
Gráinne Zannis’ work is inspired by the Irish landscape, flora and fauna, and the mythical. Her artworks showcase the soft beauty of felted fabric and draw the viewer in with their intricacies. This exhibition which displays the work of a mother handing her craft down to her children is one you have to see.
