Tipperary County Council Release Road Salting Plan
Tipperary County Council have released their Winter Road Salting plan which lays out the priorities of the council for road maintenance during harsh winter weather conditions. Roadways across the county have been split into three sectors based on how vital it is to prepare them for icy conditions. This has been done in order to maximise the benefit to motorists, taking into account the resources available to the council, finance and equipment.
Roads across Tipperary have been divided into the three priority sectors as follows:
Priority 1 | M7 & M8 Motorways, National Roads and Regional Roads of strategic importance, for example Expressway Bus Routes, Train and Bus Access Points and Emergency Service Routes will be given first priority for salting when cold weather conditions are forecast. |
Priority 2 | Regional Roads with high numbers of vehicles on them and access to schools and industries will be next in line for the allocation of winter road maintenance services. |
Priority 3 | This final sector includes all other regional roads, town streets and local country roads which will be attended to on a priority basis. |
In an event where freezing weather conditions are forecast between the months of October and April each year, teams of 12 will be allocated to pre salt Priority 1 and Priority 2. There is a supply of approximately 3,880 tonnes of salt available to the council which will be an adequate amount for up to 5 days of freezing weather.
Motorists are also being reminded that although the council strive to improvement their winter road maintenance services each year, they are under no statutory obligation to salt roads, as such they should ensure that they take extra care when driving in extreme weather conditions such as black ice, snow and white frost. Precautions should always be taken when traveling in adverse weather conditions in accordance with prevailing road conditions.
