As the country continues to battle severe winter weather conditions, Ireland’s most established female racing driver and Tipperary native Nicole Drought has offered her advice to motorists to ensure that they are aware of steps they can take to decrease risk of accidents when driving in these adverse conditions. Nicole has listed ten things that drivers must keep in mind when travelling in dangerous driving conditions.

.If you know bad weather is on the way, check your vehicles tyre condition and tyre pressure. Also ensure that you have enough windscreen washer fluid and an additive too to stop it freezing.
.Don’t drive unless it is necessary.
.Allow extra time for journeys taking car warming, window clearing and de-icing into account. Drive slower on journeys.
.Don’t turn on wipers until the windscreen has fully defrosted as not doing this may cause damage to the wiper blades.
.Use pedals as if you are treading on eggshells – no hard application of power or brakes.
.Use low revs and change up as early as possible.
.Leave at least three times the usual gap or more to the vehicle in front.
.Try to anticipate hills by leaving a large gap when climbing and avoid charging gear while doing so.
.When coming downhill, use a low gear to slow the car and avoid using the brakes unless you have to.
.Brake before a corner (not during). If your car does begin to skid, steer into the skid. This means keep steering in the direction that you want to travel.
