Clonmel Library Children’s Chess Club

Chess Figures

Every Saturday at 2pm, Clonmel Library hosts a chess club exclusively for children ages six and up. The club provides an opportunity for children to meet friends and learn how to play the game of chess.

Chess is a game played on a board with figures in two colours; black and white. Each set of figures contains 16 pieces with one king, one queen, two bishops, two rooks, two knights and eight pawns. Chess is a game of strategy where each figure can only be moved in a particular way. The players must move their figures around the board in order to move and capture all of their opponent’s figures first.

Specific figures on chess sets can only be moved in the following ways:

Queen  Move one square in any direction
King   Move one square in any direction
Knight  Move either one square vertically and two horizontally or vice versa. These are the only pieces that can jump over other pieces
Rook  Starts the game at the corners and can only move horizontally or vertically.
Bishop   Can only move diagonally
Pawn   Can only be moved forward one square at a time

All children under seven years of age must be accompanied by an adult. For more information on the Clonmel Library Chess Club call 052 616 6130 or email clonmellibrary@tipperarycoco.ie
