Carrick on Suir Library Present ‘Highlights’ Stained Glass Photography Exhibition

Stained Glass

Carrick Library is hosting a photographic display of Stained Glass Windows in Tipperary. The photographs included in the ‘Highlights’ exhibition were taken by Clonmel Camera Club.

Stained Glass Windows date back as far as the 4th and 5th centuries where they could be found in the houses of the wealthy in ancient Rome. In the 12th and 13th centuries advancements were made in the techniques used to create these spectacular windows. The introduction of the Gothic style of architecture brought with it the opportunity to create more ornate stained-glass windows. Thinner walls in gothic cathedrals created more space for stained glass windows which often depicted religious figures in brightly coloured glass scenes surrounded by delicate stone bar tracery.

A revival of the use of stained-glass windows in Ireland began in the nineteenth century leading to it becoming more and more popular across the country.

The ‘Highlights’ photography exhibition will begin on Monday November 25th and be open to the public until Friday December 6th.
