Cabragh Wetlands Celebrate Samhain on October 31st
The Cabragh Wetlands are hosting a ‘Celebration of Samhain’ at their visitors’ centre on the 31st of October at 8pm.
Samhain is a pagan festival which takes place on October 31st and is based around welcoming the harvest and the winter. Those who celebrated the Samhain festival in ancient times believed that Samhain also marked a time where the barrier between the physical and spiritual worlds were lifted.
Ancient Celts would dress as animals and monsters to ward off any other worldly beings which may want to harm them while the veil between worlds was fluid. In this way Samhain created the foundations for the modern Halloween celebrations. Bonfires, carved turnips and the myths of ghosts and supernatural beings have all been adapted from their origins at the Samhain festival and are still around today.
The wetlands are inviting everyone to ring in the dark months in this communal celebration of Samhain.
