St. Mary’s Hurling Club Receives Texaco Support for Sport County Award
As part of the Texaco Support for Sport Initiative 2024, St. Mary’s Hurling Club in Clonmel have been chosen as the County Tipperary award winners. As the winners of the Support for Sport initiative the club received €5,000 to help fund new facilities at its sports grounds.
At the centre of a sports-loving community the Clonmel club has grown from strength to strength emphasising inclusion and providing a place where sport can be accessible for all ages. The club has recently completed the second year of its sports programme designed for children aged 3 to 6 who have additional needs.
The judging process for the Support for Sport Initiative was overseen by former Ireland rugby star and well-known radio and television personality Donncha O’Callaghan who commented on the initiative saying: “As adjudicator, the most heartening aspect of the Texaco Support for Sport initiative is the benefit it brings to Irish sports clubs by providing rare access to funds which are not linked to the popularity, membership size or success of any given club.”
Speaking about the Tipperary winners of the prize fund he added: “The fact that everyone from the community, both young and old, can benefit from this club makes St. Mary’s Hurling Club stand out as a club for all. The Texaco funding will help develop new facilities that will allow this fantastic club to continue flourishing and playing a pivotal, and inclusive, role in the Clonmel area.”
Entries for the 2025 Texaco Support for Sport initiative will open in the Autumn for all clubs, including those whose application may have been unsuccessful previously.
