Cabragh Wetlands Receive Funding Under Peatlands and Natura Community Engagement Scheme 2024
Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan has announced funding for 36 community groups and organisations across the country under the Peatlands and Natura Community Engagement Scheme 2024. The funding totalling more than €458,000 will be allocated to support innovative projects for nature including the restoration of sand dunes in some coastal counties, the restoration of peatlands, the development of amenities, training in relation to invasive species and the control of invasive species, conducting surveys, public outreach and the protection of habitats, flora and fauna.
Under this scheme the Cabragh Wetlands in Tipperary have received €25,606 of funding for a targeted community awareness programme focusing on water and the wetlands. The Cabragh Wetlands is the largest area of freshwater, semi natural floodplains along the River Suir. This area is crucial for the maintenance of biodiversity and the ecosystem. Playing an increasingly important role in spreading awareness about the importance of conservation, the wetlands provide a place where the public can enjoy nature while educating people about the ecological importance of areas such as this one and promoting a greater public respect for habitats and wildlife.
Speaking about the launch of this scheme and the importance of the benefitting community projects, Minister Noonan said: “I am really impressed by the diverse and creative initiatives put forward by such active community and volunteer groups and environmental organisations.
The Peatlands and Natura Community Engagement Scheme is a collaborative scheme which draws on the local community’s deep connection with our natural heritage. Through empowering local communities, we can safeguard our precious ecosystems, enhance biodiversity, and mitigate the impacts of climate change, ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.”
