Lough Derg RNLI launched to assist 7 people on a 20ft cruiser with engine failure
On Thursday evening, July 11th, Lough Derg RNLI launched to assist seven people on a 20ft cruiser that had suffered engine failure and was drifting towards rocks just west of Garrykennedy Harbour.
The vessel was in an area known for choppy water and sudden shallows. Valentia Coast Guard informed the Lough Derg RNLI that the casualty vessel had been assisted under tow from a small speed boat. They requested that the RNLI continue to attend. When the RNLI arrived at the scene the casualty vessel had been towed to safe water by the small speed boat which had also provided 5 litres of fuel to the casualty vessel. The casualty vessel was then able to refuel and make way under its own power. Everyone on board the casualty vessel was unharmed and wearing life jackets. The Lough Derg RNLI then accompanied the casualty vessel back to Garrykennedy Harbour and departed.
Mary Hurley, Launching Authority at Lough Derg RNLI advises boat users to: ‘make sure you plan your route before setting out. Always carry sufficient fuel for your journey and carry a reliable means of communication’.
