Lidl Ireland Import German Eggs after Failing to Support Local Producers – IFA
The IFA Poultry chair Nigel Sweetnam has criticised Lidl Ireland’s plans to import German eggs, calling the move deeply troubling and contrary to their commitment to local producers.
Lidl is the only major retailer facing a shortage of eggs in Ireland, but the IFA say that they should have expected this when they refused to pay a sufficient price to obtain them. Their reliance on short term strategies backfired after long term contracts were not agreed upon “Lidl and all retailers have to engage in constructive dialogue to develop a fair, sustainable plan that supports local egg producers and ensures the survival and growth of the sector,” Mr. Sweetnam said.
“Producers need more of the margin on eggs to reinvest in their businesses. Lidl claim to have paid an increase during the summer months, but it hasn’t been passed back to producers. Lidl must ensure that the increase they claim to have paid is ringfenced for farmers.” he said
Brendan Soden, Vice chair of the Poultry Committee welcomed the recent review of the egg sector by the Agri Food Regulator. He emphasised the necessity of long-term contracts at a fair price for the sustainability of the sector under the Unfair Trading Practices. He also highlighted egg farmers’ need for long term commitments to ensure continued growth and investment in the sector.
“Farmers are seeking a sustainable price to allow for reinvestment and to be included in future planning and contract arrangements.”
Nigel Sweetnam made it clear that Irish egg producers are totally opposed to the importation of German eggs. “Should Lidl proceed without addressing our demands, we will be forced to take further action to protect our industry and livelihoods,” he said.
