CLUB FIXTURES
History was made on Sunday last when Borris-Ileigh rolled back the years by bridging a 33-year gap to claim the FBD Insurance County Senior Hurling Championship to lift the Dan Breen Cup following their 1-15 to 1-12 win over Kiladangan. Congratulations to Borris-Ileigh on their seventh county senior hurling title victory as joint captains Sean McCormack and Conor Kenny lifted the famous cup. Dan McCormack capped off a great day for the McCormack family when he was named man of the match. Dan and Sean were joined by brothers James and Ray on the Borris-Ileigh side.
The FBD Insurance Seamus Ó Riain Cup Final provided plenty of drama late on as JK Brackens, courtesy of a Lyndon Fairbrother free deep in injury time, took the honours by the narrowest of margins over Holycross-Ballycahill by 1-15 to 0-17.
The FBD Insurance County Intermediate Hurling Championship Final was moved to Bansha after Littleton was ruled out following Saturday morning’s inclement weather conditions. Great credit goes to the Galtee Rovers-St. Pecaun club for having the pitch made available and facilities in such wonderful condition at such short notice. The game itself didn’t disappoint either, despite the conditions, as Sean Treacys and Kiladangan served up a cracking contest between two evenly matched sides. The result remained in doubt for long stages before a late surge from Sean Treacys saw them over the line on a 3-14 to 2-12 score-line.
Drom & Inch claimed the FBD Insurance County Junior B Hurling Championship title by defeating Borrisokane 1-14 to 1-9 in Templederry.
So, after the weekend’s finals, congratulations to the winners and commiserations to the losers, in particular Kiladangan, having contested the senior and intermediate finals in what was a tremendous achievement for the club.
The FBD Insurance County Junior A hurling championship final between Carrick Davins and Arravale Rovers fell victim to the weather and will be played this weekend.
A quick recap then on selected results as follows;
FBD Insurance County Senior Hurling Championship Final
Borris-Ileigh 1-15 Kiladangan 1-12
FBD Insurance Seamus Ó Riain Cup Final

The FDB Insurance County Senior Football Championship Final is this weekend’s highlight at county level as Clonmel Commercials and JK Brackens prepare for Saturday afternoon’s showpiece in Semple Stadium. Having progressed through hard fought semi-finals both sides will fancy their chances. Commercials will be looking to add to their list of county titles, having last been champions in 2017, while ‘Brackens will be looking to win their first title, and will no doubt use the Seamus Ó Riain success as a platform to keep their great run going.
The FDB Insurance Tom Cusack Cup final will be a South affair when Killenaule and Kilsheelan-Kilcash meet in Clonmel on Sunday afternoon.
Elsewhere, the FDB Insurance County Intermediate Football Championship Final goes ahead in Cashel where Clonmel Óg and Moycarkey-Borris meet in the decider, also on Sunday.
The FDB Insurance County Junior Football Championships should also be decided this Saturday as Portroe and Mullinahone meet in the ‘A’ final, while in the ‘B’ decider, Éire Óg Annacarty-Donohill and Killenaule meet in Littleton.
Also, going ahead this weekend are both hurling fixtures carried over from last weekend, where Carrick Davins and Arravale Rovers get ready once again to meet in the FDB Insurance County Junior A Hurling Championship Final. In the FBD Insurance County Intermediate Hurling Championship Relegation Final, it’s a West affair when Galtee Rovers-St. Pecaun and Lattin Cullen Gaels meet in Sean Treacy Park.

GAA ALL-STARS
Congratulations to seven Tipperary players on receiving their PwC All-Star Awards last Friday night, with the highlight of the night going to Séamus Callanan (Drom-Inch) as he claimed the coveted PwC GAA/GPA Hurler of the Year. This is a fantastic achievement for Séamus, and one richly deserved.
The seven award winners are Brian Hogan (Lorrha-Dorrha) 1st All-Star, Ronan Maher (Thurles Sarsfields) 2nd, Cathal Barrett (Holycross-Ballycahill) 2nd, Brendan Maher (Borris-Ileigh) 3rd, Pádraic Maher (Thurles Sarsfields) 6th, Noel McGrath (Loughmore-Castleiney) 3rd, and Séamus Callanan 4th award.
The All-Star Awards round off a fantastic year for Tipp and with it created a few milestones of their own. Padraic Maher in winning his sixth award, equals the Tipperary record of awards by an individual as he joins greats of the recent past, Nicky English and Eoin Kelly.
It is a very special award for the Hogan family as Brian has also entered the record books as he becomes the first Tipperary player to join his father, Ken, on the All-Star honours list. It is more unique as it is the first time the award has been won by a father/son in the same on field position. Ken was honoured with his award in 1987.

Mark was high among the scorers with a number of goals, as Ireland ran out 7-11 to 4-2 winners. Congratulations to Mark and his team on their victory.

TIPPERARY GAA BLOODY SUNDAY COMMERATION COMMITTEE
By Enda O’Sullivan
On a fateful day in late November, Mick Hogan did line out,
He travelled from his native Tipp to take on Dublin in Croke Park.
He took his place upon the field then hoisted high the ball went in,
The cornerback gave his best for all of Tipp but little did he know that t’would be the last breath he’d take on Erins field that day.
The British came and gunned him down and many more besides,
Dear young Mick died by his teammates sides, as his blood did spill over by the old Hill and corner of the Cusack side.
Those white and green Tipp jerseys, were filled with sweat and tears, but they did turn red that day with the blood of Erins child.
And now when we sit, as we make that trip, to Croker that is so fair,
The stand is called, opposite where he did fall, in his memory today.
Rest well now those who since have wore, our dear blue and gold, but we’ll ner forget that white and green of old,
And dear Tipperary will not forget, Mick Hogan and our heroes of yore.
The memory of an event, that became known as Bloody Sunday twenty-four hours after it happened, still lingers one hundred years on in our collective psyche, as people of Tipp recall in a distant way the name of Mick Hogan and the event that is synonymous with the GAA and Croke Park and Tipperary football to this day.
2020 marks a very special year for Tipperary football in that it is one hundred years on from Bloody Sunday when one of our own was shot, fell and died on the famous sod of Croke Park. Mick Hogan, like the rest of the Tipperary panel and like those that wear the Tipperary jersey to this day, went out to represent his homeland and play alongside his teammates. His passing, and that of the others that lost their lives, had a profound effect on all those present and how the GAA developed subsequently.
Now as we approach 2020, most who read this will be filled with fond memories of Croke Park and of the fine performances of Tipperary hurling and football teams there over the past decade. Oft some of us have sat in the Hogan Stand, called after the Grangemockler corner back who was shot on Bloody Sunday, and we have tried to see in our minds eye what happened that day and the context of Ireland at that time and how it changed and turned into what we now know as home in the 21st century.
This coming year, the Bloody Sunday Football Commemorative Committee, a sub-committee of the Tipperary Football Committee, will run a series of events across the year to commemorate that era and event in our history.
On November 21st, 2020 there will be a commemorate match played in Croke Park to honour the memory of those who were there on the fateful day when the course of history changed. Ahead of it, we will host a series of event in the months leading up to the match.
Croke Park and Dublin GAA will also be organizing commemorations and our committee are liaising closely to ensure an integrated programme of events. We hope there will be something for everybody across the year and that people will gain a deeper understanding and broadening of knowledge and develop an awareness of ‘Bloody Sunday’ and its meaning.
In Tipperary sport runs deep and for many in our fine county this centenary, of those times, will be a poignant and heart felt one. We hope to, as best we can, to encompass and bring the GAA community and indeed the wider community on a journey of remembrance along the way with us.
Our senior footballers back then in November 1920 left Tipp on a journey to Dublin and from that time forth the story of Tipp football and indeed the GAA and society in general changed forevermore. Now as we reflect on 2019 and the respective stories for the Tipp hurling and football teams, we look ahead to 2020 filled with all the hopes and dreams a new year brings. We hope you will take a moment sometime along the way and think of those times and people and feel that connection between then and now.
The Tipperary football and hurling teams and respective managements are busy preparing now in Dr Morris Park and selectors are planning the road ahead for 2020 but for the new senior football manager, David Power, the Tipp senior footballers and Gaels everywhere, there is an engagement in Croke Park in November 2020 that will be filled with the past and the present. In a way it’s a distant folk memory and yet the moment Tipperary and Dublin, in jerseys of old, take the field one hundred years on from 1920, it will be as real as the moment Mick Hogan took his place on the field between the Cusack Stand and the Hill and lined out at corner back when the fateful challenge game between Tipp and Dublin got underway. One hundred years on, we will pause and reflect.
The Tipperary football committee has a series of events planned for the coming year with planned events beginning in March as follows:
- March 2nd at 7.30pm in Nenagh, John Flannery will host a lecture relating to Bloody Sunday in association with the Ormond Historical Society.
- March 28th, at 7.30pm, at Bru Boru Cultural Centre, Cashel in partnership with Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, Tipperary GAA will host a cultural evening of music, song and dance entitled “An Dushlan” which will be directed by Ray Conway.
- April 28th, at 7.30pm, in ‘The Source’ Thurles author Paul Rouse, Associate Professor in UCD, who has written extensively on the history of Irish sport, will continue with our lecture series relating to Bloody Sunday.
- From May to September 2020 a series of commemorations will take place across the season at the gravesides of the panel of players who played a role on Bloody Sunday. We will remember them and lay a wreath by their graveside. More dates and details will be on the ‘Tipperary GAA’ official website, the ‘Friends of Tipperary football’ website and on local media platforms closer to the time.
- October 21st, at 7.30pm, as the centenary date approaches, Michael Foley author of “The Bloodied Field”, will host a lecture in Fethard about the events and time Bloody Sunday took place.
- November 7th, in the evening time, a Memorial Mass relating to ‘Bloody Sunday’ will take place at the Cathedral of the Assumption in Thurles.
- November 21st, in the evening time, a football game to commemorate the challenge match between Tipperary and Dublin one hundred years before will take place in Croke Park, Dublin.
- November 22nd, 2020 in Grangemockler, Bloody Sunday, and those of the time, will be remembered.
More details of all events to follow across local media and social media platforms. We hope all the people of Tipperary and beyond will connect with this major milestone in GAA history.

LONDON TEAM TIPPERARY CORPORATE FUNDRAISER
By Larry Cooney
Just over three months since the Tipperary hurlers’ memorable All-Ireland final victory over Kilkenny the Liam MacCarthy Cup will take pride of place at the fourth Team Tipperary Corporate Lunch fundraiser in London at the InterContinental Hotel off Park Lane on Friday afternoon, the 22nd of November. This event is also scheduled a week after Tipperary’s first action since this year’s All-Ireland final when they join defeated finalists Kilkenny and defeated semi-finalists Wexford and Limerick in this year’s Super 11s New York Classic tournament in New York on the 16th of November.
The series was played at Boston’s Fenway Park in the last two years, but the 2019 edition will be staged at Citi Field and the competition has been renamed the ‘New York Classic’. The Queens venue is the home of the New York Mets and the Major League Baseball franchise have confirmed the details of the event.
Consequently, it is unclear yet just how many will be travelling to London on the following week, but the Liam MacCarthy Cup will also be joined by the new U20 hurling cup accompanied by Nenagh’s Jake Morris. This year’s Tipperary ladies’ football captain of the Intermediate All-Ireland champions, Samantha Lambert will also be travelling with that cup. Although it is believed that Brendan Maher would be representing the senior hurlers much will depend on his availability if his club Borrisoleigh win the Dan Breen Cup and are still involved in the provincial club championship.
£150k raised by Team Tipperary on three previous London visits
All-Ireland winners require the best in modern state-of-the-art training facilities and that is certainly what Tipperary GAA’s Centre of Excellence at Dr. Morris Park will be when fully completed by the end of the end of 2020. This project will be the ‘hub’ for nurturing the development of future Tipperary players from underage blitzes to development squads to academies and right through to Tipperary senior panels. This modern state of the art facilities will also be on a par with the best in the country. And after the culmination of many years work, 2019 has once again proved beyond all doubt that Tipperary does have the genuine male and female talent to become and continue to become a major force for many years into the future.
Funding modern training facilities
It was in May 2017 when Team Tipperary last visited London when they were also accompanied by the Liam MacCarthy Cup escorted by the then manager Michael Ryan. That fundraiser along with the two previous visits to London has helped to add a total of £150,000 to help fund the current development work in order for Tipperary to achieve their long term on-field ambitions.
And with up to more than four hundred diners already assured of attending the latest function in the heart of the West End the success of this event will therefore further help to fund these Tipperary GAA ambitions to provide a modern two-storey building that will be an integral part of the new training facilities complex. That training complex will include a gym; analysis room; office; kitchen; dining room; indoor viewing area; 4 dressing rooms/showers; medical centre; meeting room and a reception area complete with stairs & elevator.
And if the three previous functions at the InterContinental Hotel is any indication of what’s in store then another enjoyable and unmissable afternoon looks assured in the company of Tipperary GAA guests and their hard-won silverware of 2019.
Once again, the event will be co-ordinated by Clonmel native Brian Acheson and his fellow hosts of the London-based Tipperary supporters club and organising committee namely Kevin Leahy, Phil Cusack and Paddy Shanahan.
Although further details of the identity of hosts will be confirmed in the next few weeks very few reservations remain but can still be made to the Tipperary GAA Office at Lar na Páirce, Thurles, 0504 22702 or email: secretary.tipperary@gaa.ie. Further details on the Tipperary GAA website.
