Schools Summer Works Scheme application process now open – Mattie McGrath

Independent TD Mattie McGrath has encouraged all Primary, Secondary, Community and Comprehensive Schools and The Chief Executives of Education and Training Boards to prepare their applications for the Schools Summer Works Scheme. Deputy McGrath was speaking after the Department of Education confirmed to him that they will be accepting applications from today for works due to commence in the summer of 2020:

“This is a vital Capital Grants scheme for Small/Medium Scale Works in Primary and Post-Primary Schools and I urge all Principals make every effort to seek available funding.

This summer will see about 16 schools in Tipperary receive funding for structural work and minor repairs such as windows.

It would be fantastic to see that number increase for 2020 given the continuous and year round pressure that so many schools experience with respect to generating sufficient funds for basic works.

The Department also appear to have realised that schools need a much longer application period, which is an aspect of the process that I have often brought to their attention. It is good to see then that for the 2020 Scheme, school authorities will have a 13 week period until 30 June 2019 to submit applications. This compares to a 5 week period under previous schemes.

School authorities will be notified in Quarter 4 of 2019 of successful applications.

To my mind this provides a better lead in period for school authorities to manage the planning, organisation, procurement and delivery of their projects,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
