Government negligence has forced nurses and midwives into strike action – McCormack
The decision of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation to declare for 24-hour strike is not one taken lightly but is necessary according to Sinn Féin general election candidate Ciara McCormack.
“The government have been very neglectful of our nurses and midwives, and for too long their goodwill has been abused.
“And it is with that, that strike action has become unavoidable.
“A strike is the last thing nurses and midwives wants, but the government have exploited that sentiment to undermine their requests and demands.
“The government have had nearly 8 years to address the nursing recruitment and retention crisis in the health service, but have failed miserably.
“That failure has made rendered strike action the only credible option.
“This will be only the second time in the INMO’s 100-year history that it’s going on strike. They deserve nothing less than absolute and unequivocal support against a government who have mistreated and undervalued them for too long.”
