Tipperary Energy Agency CEO Presents to International Energy Agency Heat Pump Research Seminar
Tipperary Energy Agency CEO, Paul Kenny presented at the International Energy Agency Heat Pump Research Seminar which took place on September 25thin the BEIS Conference Centre in London.
Attendees at the conference heard about current and future heat pump research through the International Energy Agency Heat Pumping Technologies (IEA-HPT) Technology Collaboration Programme (TCP).
Mr Kenny presented on recent findings from the Tipperary Energy Agency run SuperHomes Ireland program and spoke about the performance of heat pumps in Ireland during cold weather and if there really is a need for back up heat.
To date, there has been 150 homes retrofitted as part of the SuperHomes Ireland program with heat pumps installed in each home. None of these homes have a backup heating system. During the ‘Beast from the East’ in March of this year, temperatures dropped below zero for 7 days and the country was covered in a blanket of 300mm of snow. SuperHomes Ireland didn’t receive a single complaint about the heat pumps installed in homes. In fact, the SuperHomes team received several positive emails and texts from homeowners about the heating in their homes during the severe weather.
Now in its 5th year, the SuperHomes program has supported over 150 homeowners across Ireland to retrofit to A3 standard with a low carbon footprint and an even lower bill. The capital grants are funded by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland’s deep retrofit program and better energy communities programs. The levels of funding on offer vary from 35% up to 50% for the measures needed to get any home built prior to 2011 to an A3 rating. Most homes reduce their energy costs and carbon footprint by 60% – 80% and experience steady warm temperatures all year round.
