Independent TD Mattie McGrath along with fellow Oireachtas members, John McGuiness, Michael Collins and Michael Healy-Rae as well as representatives from the Friends of Banking Ireland, Jerry Beades and Tom D’Arcy met yesterday with the Head of Retail at Permanent TSB, Brendan Kerins. Speaking after the meeting, Deputy McGrath said that there was respectful and constructive engagement by both sides in an effort to address the mortgage crisis and any possible resolution that may be offered such as that proposed in the Private Members Bill that is being initiated by both he and Deputy McGuiness and which has been drafted by the Master of the High Court, Edmond Honohan:

“We called for this urgent meeting in order to stress the gravity of the crisis that is facing homeowners in mortgage distress and to engage in good faith with PTSB.

Our primary objective was to advance a fair and equitable solution and one that would guarantee as much protection as possible for all of those who may be affected.

We left PTSB with no uncertainty about our determination to pursue that goal through any and all means at our disposal.

We are also seeking to engage today with the KBC Bank in order to ensure that they too are keenly aware of the scale of opposition that exists in terms of selling off loan books,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
