The Simon Ryan Theatre, Tipperary Excel hosts Tipperary Musical Society 2016 production of Evita, from Monday 22nd to Saturday 27th February 2016. Evita, the internationally recognised musical by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber concentrates on the life of Argentine political leader Eva Perón, the second wife of Argentine president Juan Perón. The story follows Evita’s early life, rise to power, charity work, and eventual death.The musical began as a rock opera concept album released in 1976. Its success led to productions in London‘s West End in 1978, winning the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical, and on Broadway a year later, where it was the first British musical to receive the Tony Award for Best Musical. This has been followed by a string of professional tours and worldwide productions and numerous cast albums, as well as a major 1996 film of the musical starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas. The musical was revived in London in 2006, and on Broadway in 2012, and toured the UK again in 2013-14 before running for 55 West End performances. Early booking is strongly recommended. Tipperary Excel proudly hosts “Discover Jane Austen” on Saturday 5th March 2016. The ambitious and innovate programme will give Austen enthusiasts a great insight into Life, Times and Works of this much lover author. Jane Austen created some of literature’s most celebrated characters, defining her era, sex and class. Two hundred years on, her works continue to speak for the yearning heart as much as they did when they were written. Activities include Regency Afternoon Tea, Art Exhibition,Regency Dance Workshop, screening of the much loved film Pride & Prejudice, with the pièce de résistance being the presentation of AUSTEN’S WOMEN by the critically acclaimed Theatre Tours International in association with Dyad Productions at 8pm. In a solo performance of extraordinary
virtuosity– using only Austen’ swords–actor Rebecca! Vaughan answers this question by boldly revisiting the most rewarding moments! from all six major! novels – including Pride & Prejudice, Sense& & Sensibility and Emma – plus those in lesser known works such as Austen’s Juvenilia and the unfinished Sanditon. AUSTEN WOMEN’S, the first in a trilogy of plays being hosted by the Tipperary Excel, is specifically geared towards Leaving Certificate Students. The Tipperary Excel board who is spearheading this initiative believes it will be of great benefit to Tipperary secondary school students.
The Simon Ryan Theatre, Tipperary Excel will present Translations by Brian Friel on Friday 11thand Saturday 12th March 2016. As part of its Easter Rising 1916 Centenary Commemoration, Tipperary Excel has enlisted community amateur actors and local technical talent to honor the late playwright Brian Friel by presenting his masterpiece Translations. This is the second in the trilogy of plays geared towards Leaving Certificate syllabus. Feeding into this production Tipperary Excel is hosting a traditional music display and showcasing Sean-nós dancing with world renowned dancer Emma O’Sullivan. In the Tipperary Excel Art Gallery we are hosting a local history display of Lady Maud’s photographs alongside other historical photographs, research on localTipperary Hedge Schools, the translation of local place names and their Gaelic meaning which was lost, and other political issues of 1833, which helped bring us to where we were on that Easter morning of 1916.
