Minister Kelly’s ‘Power Is A Drug’ Comment Is Destructive And Elitist – McGrath
Independent TD Mattie McGrath has called on the Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly to withdraw comments he made where he likened his love of power to a drug. Deputy McGrath was speaking after Minister Kelly’s comments were reported in an interview he engaged with for The Sunday Independent newspaper:
“Quite frankly the comments made by Minister Kelly not only provide a worrying insight into what motivates him politically but they also reveal an incredibly elitist and dangerous personal agenda.
The statements he is brazenly coming out with are something one would expect to hear from a tin pot dictator, not a so called representative of the working class which he and his Party purport to be.
I also think that to speak in this incredibly arrogant manner sends a dangerous and confusing message to young people that can only further alienate them from the democratic process.
He is essentially confirming every crass stereotype that exists about politicians and the political life. and is single-handedly undermining the integrity of a TD’s work.
At the very least the Tanaiste as leader of his Party needs to reign him in before he single-handedly undermines the integrity of every TD’s work,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
