Floods: EU Commission statement following meeting with Minister Alan Kelly
Commissioner for the Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella, and Irish Environment Minister Alan Kelly in Brussels
Just finished meeting today in Brussels (20th January) EU Commissioner for the Environment, Karmenu Vella and Irish Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly held a productive discussion on Flood management. Commissioner Vella noted the progress Ireland was making in advancing actions at a river basin level which are taking account of the relevant EU Directives. He re-iterated the Commission’s willingness to assist the Irish Government in its important work.
Commissioner Vella also reiterated that; “On flood management, EU environmental legislation is not a problem but a significant part of a sustainable solution and central to effective planning. I welcome Minister Kelly’s commitment to act now and put in place the necessary measures to manage risks from flooding and ensure effective and timely responses in the future”.
