Tipperary driver Pat O’Connell wins MEC Rallysprint at Mondello Park

Tipperary driver Pat O'Connell drove his Lancer Evo 9 to a comfortable win in yesterday's MEC Rallysprint at Mondello Park, finishing the three runs 27 seconds clear of his nearest challenger, Alan Smyth, in a Suzuki Swift. Jason Roche took third place overall, with Graham Kelly heading a close three way battle for fourth position.

Last year's winner Liam Ryan looked to be headed for a repeat victory, opening out a 24 second gap over O'Connell on the first two runs, but he slid off into a bank on his final attempt, damaging his Lancer's front suspension and getting a maximum time which left him well down the field.

The main motorsport event of the weekend, the Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Car Stages Rally, was a victim of Storm Desmond, with the dreadful weather conditions in the south west of the country forcing its postponement.
