SuperValu closure a serious shock for Clonmel – McGrath
Independent TD Mattie McGrath has expressed his shock and sympathy to the 50 workers at Clonmel’s SuperValu store after its closure was announced by its owners the Musgrave Group. Deputy McGrath said the loss, expected to be effective from January raises serious questions around the reasons given for the closure:
“This is very distressing news for all the employees and their families in the run up to Christmas. But I can assure them that I will be making all necessary representations to Government in an attempt to source an alternative employer for the site.
I am surprised however at the reasons given for the closure given that the latest competitive data shows Tesco’s market share of 25pc is only marginally bigger than the 24.9pc of the market taken by SuperValu.
In light of those figures it is unclear what the Musgrave Group mean when they say lack of consumer activity is the sole reason for the store’s closure.
In any event I am sure these are matters that will form part of our attempts to get employment back to the town as soon as possible,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
