Minister Must Draw Down European Union Solidarity Fund For Flooding – McGrath
Independent TD Mattie McGrath has called on Minister Alan Kelly and Minister of State at the OPW Simon Harris to explain why they have not applied for flood prevention assistance to the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF). Deputy McGrath was speaking as areas of Tipperary continue to witness rising levels of rain and river water, with parts of Clonmel now closed due to the danger:
The whole point of the EUSF was to assist in areas affected by severe flooding.
I have already asked the ministers why they have returned €40 million of unspent money back to their Department when there is such clear and obvious need.
If they won’t draw down some of that 40 million let them at least at apply for a portion of the €3.7 billion which had been given from over 24 different European countries to the EUSF.
Tipperary and the rest of the Country are going to be living with this for months.
The least we can do is avail of every single funding option out there to alleviate the consequences,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
