Irish Water Compounding Flood Victims Misery – McGrath

Independent TD Mattie McGrath has called on Irish Water to exhibit a greater degree of flexibility with respect to assisting victims in areas of severe flooding. Deputy McGrath was speaking from Carrick on Suir in County Tipperary where a significant proportion of homes have been badly hit by torrential rain and river flooding:

“I have been told by numerous families that Irish Water are failing to assist in even a minimal capacity with respect to damaged water infrastructure caused by the flooding.

Beyond the areas in Carrick-on-Suir there are places like Kilganey outside Clonmel where there is enormous confusion and distress because no one appears to be accepting responsibility for repair work.

This is the natural outcome of the complete chaos being caused by the Irish Water who have continually redirected legitimate concerns back to the responsibility of the local councils.

In times of crisis like this I would have thought that every agency of the State and semi State would pull together to assist these distressed families.

Instead what we are witnessing is petty territorial squabbles about what is and what is not the responsibility of Irish Water.

I am also calling on Minister Alan Kelly and Minister of State at the OPW Simon Harris to visit places like Carrick-on-Suir which are experiencing severe challenges caused by this flooding,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
