Construction Finally Begins For South Tipp General Radiology

Independent TD Mattie McGrath has welcomed the news that work is finally commencing on the long overdue improvements to radiology and CT Scan services at South Tipperary General Hospital. Deputy McGrath was speaking after he received notification of the work in response to a Parliamentary Question he had placed seeking an update on the progress of the work:

“We had been told in July that there was going to be at least a 15 month wait before the new services came on line.

Nothing has essentially changed since then in terms of the completion date but at least now we have been informed that the contractor is on site from yesterday Monday 2nd of November for the entire 40 week build, meaning the project is set to be completed in July 2016.

Rock excavation will commence mid-November and the pouring of concrete is scheduled from 26th of November with rising walls being visible before Christmas.

The fact remains however that initial assurances were given around housing a newly purchased CT Scanner as far back as 2014.

That more than anything demonstrates the depth of the HSE commitment to escalating the improvement of radiology services at STGH.

It must also be pointed out that there are still legitimate patient safety concerns in light of the recurring breakdowns and spare part failures which are afflicting the current CT scanner.

In light of that I am still calling for guarantees that the work that is currently underway will be protected and its funding ring fenced until its completion,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
