Wind Turbine decision a victory for community rights – McGrath
Independent TD Mattie McGrath has welcomed the decision of Tipperary County Council to deny planning permission for the construction of an almost eighty metre high wind turbine at Ahenny village. Deputy McGrath was speaking after the decision was announced following a concerted and well organised campaign of local resistance to the plan:
“In the overall scheme of our disjointed and misguided national energy policy, this may look like a small victory. But when it is seen in the context of what a passionate and well informed community can bring about, it is highly significant.
All those dozens of people who attended the protest meeting in Upper Newtown National School some weeks ago have had their voices heard loud and clear.
This kind of outcome demonstrates that the community itself is best placed to decide on what will and will not benefit it in terms of the development of the local environment and the implementation of unwelcome energy policies.
I am delighted for the communities involved and pay tribute to all of those that led such a successful campaign,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
