Media Department at Templemore College Showcase in Dublin
Over 100 students and staff members were involved in the TCFE production of the movie ‘Heroes Among Us’ which was recently showcased on Saturday 3rd October in Collins Barracks, Dublin.
This was a film that focused on teaching the students the art of Special FX in movie making. A lot of the work was Digital Special FX such as laser beam eyes, freezing time, leaping over tall buildings and then there was also Special FX Makeup including scars and open wounds. It proved to be a very enjoyable experience for everyone who took part. The production brought the whole college together to work cohesively on a project that wouldn’t have been possible without the generous grant from the NAPD.
The funding came from Creative Engagement an initiative funded by the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals (NAPD). It encourages schools to link with artists in the community to provide opportunities for learning that they would not ordinarily have. Templemore College enlisted the expertise of film producer Alan Brown, Krown Films, UK.
Alan facilitated training workshops with the students of Film and TV, Creative Media and Cartoon Animation in the areas of film directing, acting for camera, sound, lighting, editing and Special FX . Whilst Ciara O’Sullivan (Film & Television and PLC Co-Ordinator) trained the students in the art of Special FX Makeup.
The students made the film themselves under Alan and Ciara’s guidance and benefitted from the experience so much so that they were able to apply the techniques they learned to the making of their own individual films once the creative engagement project ended.
The summary of the film is:
A new student enrols in a school only to find himself the victim of the school bully and his gang. The new student hides a secret. He has superpowers. He exposes the secret in front of a fellow female student who hides a secret superpower of her own. Together they launch a business where they use their powers for the good of the community.
The film was screened at the creative engagement exhibition in Collins Barracks in Dublin on Saturday last which was officially opened by Mairead McGuinness MEP.
