MUNSTER LADIES FOOTBALL JUNIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

By Siobhan Condon, Tipperary Ladies Secretary

Following their success in the County Championship, Templemore travelled to Monaleen in Limerick to face the Clare champions, Coolmeen, in the Munster Junior Championship Quarter Final on Saturday, September 19th. Played in ideal conditions, Templemore started brightly and dominated the early stages with two quick points. A goal from Sarah Buckley served to further extend Templemore’s lead. However, with the second quarter now being played at a near frenetic pace, Coolmeen began

to come into the game. It was at this stage that the Coolmeen forwards were at their most dangerous and only for the timely interventions of the Templemore defenders and in particular full back Maria Curley, who blocked a near certain goal, then Coolmeen may have found themselves closer to the Tipperary champions. In the 27th minute, Elaine Fitzpatrick ran from mid-field through the Coolmeen defence to score a great goal which helped to restore Templemore’s lead as half time approached. The half time score was Templemore 2-7 Coolmeen 0-4.

The saying “goals win games” proved to be very appropriate in the second half. Two goals in two minutes early in the second half effectively ended any hope that Coolmeen had of a comeback. The first goal came in the 33rd minute came from Ciara Nyland and the second came in the 35th minute from Miriam Campion, who continued on in her great goal scoring form following her three goals in the County Junior Final. The score at this stage was Templemore 4-7 Coolmeen 0-4. The Clare side continued to work hard and found the back of the net themselves in the 44th minute. However, the composure of Templemore goalie Katie Bourke and the team work and work ethic of all of Templemore’s outfield players meant that there was only going to be one winner on the day. Fittingly, Templemore’s final score of the day was to be another goal, scored by substitute Aine Greed in the 54th minute. The final score was 5-9 Coolmeen 1-8. Templemore, who remarkably only have one player aged over eighteen on their panel, will continue their Munster journey on October 3rd when they will play Limerick champions Feohanagh/Castlemahon, who defeated the Kerry champions Corca Dhuibhne.
