This is a huge funding boost for Fethard tourism – McGrath
Independent TD Mattie McGrath has congratulated all those involved in the Tholsel Visitor Centre, Fethard, after it secured that €198k in funding from Fáilte Ireland. Deputy McGrath went on to say that the funding is being provided as part of the continuing roll out of the ‘New ideas in Ancient Spaces’ Capital Grants Scheme which is part of the Ancient East initiative:
“This is a significant and most welcome announcement from Fáilte Ireland. It will contribute enormously to the growth and rejuvenation of the South Tipperary tourism industry and the tourism prospects of the county as a whole.
I understand that the funding is intended to support phase two of a project which aims to transform the Tholsel building into a state of the art visitor centre and provide a platform to promote Fethard as a significant visitor destination.
I also understand from Fáilte Ireland that on it’s completion, the Tholsel Visitor Centre will house a €1.6m interactive exhibition focused on Medieval Fethard.
While this is excellent news for Fethard, it has also renewed our commitment to have ancient heritage towns like Cahir included in the Ancient East initiative. The absence of Cahir from that project was a grievous oversight and must be rectified as soon as possible,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
