Less Than 7 Houses Built In Tipperary In 2015
Independent TD Mattie McGrath has described the latest house building figures released from the Department of the Environment for Co. Tipperary as confirmation of the scale of under-investment in the county. Deputy McGrath was speaking as the data from the Building Control Management System which is managed by the Local Government Management Agency show that there were only six publicly available houses built in the county up to the end of July 2015:
“These numbers are incredibly worrying and point once again to the total failure of the Government to address the scale of the housing emergency with anything like the speed that is required.
From March to December 2014 there were zero houses build in the county that could have been placed on the public market, while there were thirty one off houses.
In 2015 the number of publicly available houses has not even reached double digits with only six houses being built for that purpose while fifty one off houses were built.
It is now a matter of clear and certain judgement that this Government and this Minister for the Environment’s ability to deal with this crisis has been exposed as recklessly incompetent.
Minister Alan Kelly cannot spin his way out of denying these figures, which have come from his own Department after all.
The Government must now accede to requests from all sectors and declare the housing crisis in this Country a national emergency,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
