Celebrations in Terryglass as 17th Terryglass Arts Festival Opens

The 17th Annual Terryglass Arts Festival will be officially opened  on Wednesday 12th August by Niall de Búrca, and will include a performance from Ireland’s Eurovision entry Molly Sterling in the Festival Marquee. From nearby Puckane, Molly was the youngest ever entrant to perform for Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest.

A large attendance is expected for Wednesday’s festival opening which continues with a feast of storytelling from internationally acclaimed artist Niall de Búrca in Terryglass Hall at 9pm (Admission €5).

After months of hard work, Festival Chairperson, Emma Pearce is eagerly looking forward to the festival and has extended an invitation to members of the public to attend the official opening and the celebratory concert.

“The festival has received tremendous support and good will from our local community here in Terryglass and I would like to extend a warm invitation to members of the public to attend the official opening and support opening events tonight,” said Ms. Pearce.

Headline acts performing during the five day family friendly festival include one of Ireland’s most successful singer/songwriters Paddy Casey. The talented entertainer, who adds depth and credibility to his songs, creating hit singles time and time again, will perform a special intimate gig in Terryglass Church on Friday 14thAugust.

Serving up a Molotov cocktail of comedy, magic and sword swallowing on Thursday 13th August is ventriloquist, magician and sword swallower Jack Wise . As Ireland’s only sword swallower the audience will witness the spine tingling moment when Jack swallows a 24 inch real sword!  But the highlight of the show has to be Jack’s ventriloquism. Using a face mask with a moveable jaw, Jack turns an audience member into a side splitting life size puppet!

The stage moves to the inside of a car for Tipperary Youth Theatre and Fracture Youth Theatre’s production of Back Seat (Saturday 15th August).  This unique theatrical treat invites its audience to experience their intimate show from the back seat of a car.

Later on Saturday night the sky will be the stage over Terryglass Quay for a spectacular piece of aerial dance theatre from artists,  Fidget Feet. This will be followed by a fireworks spectacular with resident MC Today FM’s Bob Conway supplying the tunes as darkness descends.

Sunday is a Family Fun Day featuring an outdoor Craft and Food market, face painting, street performances with Fidget Feet, Little Red Riding Hood from Moon & Sixpence Puppet Theatre and much more. There’s non stop free musical entertainment all afternoon from the Blood Red Mountain Band followed by Cajun, Bluegrass and Rock ‘n Roll music from the award winning Irish group Two Time Polka.

Terryglass Arts Festival has earned a reputation for its unique workshop programme- featuring some 70 workshops for children of all ages!  New this year are lantern making, robotics, science and alien slime workshops!  Younger children from two years upwards will enjoy theatre tots while their older siblings get their turn on the stage in theatre kids!
