Moycarkey Coolcroo A.C. News

Daniel, David & Anna Ryan were the Club’s representatives at Day 1 of the GloHealth National Juvenile Track & Field Championships in Tullamore on Saturday 4th July bringing home 3 gold, 1 silver & 1 National record between them. Daniel had an excellent day winning gold in the Boys U/17 110mH with his time of 14.13, his second time to dip under the Irish National Youth record of 14.18 & later in the day he went on to win the Boys U/17 Long Jump with his leap of 6.60m. His brother David was also on fire when he won gold in the Boys U/16 Long Jump with his jump of 6.62m, almost a metre ahead of second place & he ran a huge new personal best in the 100mH with his time of 13.45 to win silver. His jump of 6.62m was also a new National record when he bettered the Pre AAI 1989 record of 6.61m set by Derek Fitzgerald, Harolds Cross & the AAI record of 6.49m set by his older brother Daniel in 2014. Their younger sister, Anna did very well to place 2nd in her heat of the Girls U/14 75mH & she acquitted herself well in her first National final to run 12.27, just outside her pb with an 8th place finish. All 3 athletes compete again next weekend at Day 2 & Day 3 of the National Juvenile Championships with Daniel contesting the 100m & 200m David the 250mH & Anna the Long Jump & Discus. Good luck also to the following athletes who will be competing for the Club as well:- Sean Mockler (Boys U/16 Hammer, Shot Putt & Javelin), Ciara Mockler (Girls U/19 Shot Putt, Discus & Javelin), Liam McDonagh (Boys U/15 2000m Walk ) & Jack Ryan (Boys U/15 Long Jump, Triple Jump & Shot Putt).

Well done to Paul Bowe who smashed his PB for 5km at the Shannon Airport 5k on Friday 19th June breaking the 19 minute barrier in a time of 18:41 and came 25th out of a large field of 1620 participants.

It was with heavy hearts that we heard the sad new during the week that Fr.Paudie Moloughney had passed away.  He was an avid walker and most famously spent 6 months completing the 2,169 mile Appalachian Trail in America losing 4 stone in the process. He was a stalwart member of the Club & always had his treasured Moycarkey Coolcroo singlet in tow wherever he roamed. He was well known for his tireless missionary work in many countries including Nigeria & Brazil and was featured in an 1977 RTE Documentary helping build houses for the people of Brazil. He will be sadly missed by our Club & all in the Community of Moycarkey Borris. Fr. Paudie always believed that anyone that tried something and did not succeed was not a failure – the failure was the person who did not try at all. May he Rest in Peace.

Our Fit4Life Group continues to grow week by week with great success.  We now have 3 groups established, a Walkers Group with Billy Purcell, a Run/Jog Group with Kay Cantwell & a Runners Group with Shane Mullaney & Paul Bowe. All are welcome to join us on Wednesday evenings at 7.30pm & Saturday mornings at 9am, €2 per session. Meeting Point is at the Moycarkey Community Sports Centre in Littleton. For further information, contact Kay Cantwell at 086 8382517. We now have a new Facebook page called Moycarkey Coolcroo Fit4Life which is dedicated entirely to our group so keep an eye on it for daily/weekly updates.
