Kilkenny Musicians looking for a Kickstart to promote Irish Language
Two years ago an Irish version of Avicii’s Wake Me Up took YouTube by storm, going viral and bring the Irish language to the forefront of popular culture. The band behind its success, Seo Linn who performed the hit in collaboration with students from Colaiste Lurgan, are now ready for their next mission – making the Irish language enjoyable and accessible to all!
The success of their YouTube videos propelled the lads onto renowned stages such as Late Late Show stage, Dublin’s NYE live celebrations in front of 20,000 spectators, 4 private shows for the President Michael D. Higgins (including an invite to city hall in London for the official state visit), Electric Picnic and iFest, Boston. Now Kilkenny men Keith O’Briain, Daithí Ó Ruaidh and Kev Shortall, who are joined in the band by Cathal Ó Ruaidh, Conor O’ Móra and Stiofán Ó Fearail , have been presented with an opportunity to pursue their dream of promoting the Irish language in a fun and exciting way through the medium of music and entertainment full time!
The band are keen to make Seo Linn their full time job and focus all their energy on their passion for the Irish language. In an effort to make this happen the band have taken to Kickstarter to help raise some money which will be the foundation of their long term future with Seo Linn.
Firstly, they intend to set up a company that will provide music WORKSHOPS for teenagers through the medium of Irish. These will incorporate the various elements of music production and performance into a polished, tried and tested workshop that teenagers will really enjoy and relate to.
They also intend to record and promote their debut ALBUM of original music. The band believe this album would give life to Irish language music in Ireland and abroad as well as providing an opportunity to expand their horizons as a band and progress up the ladder as recording artists.
Finally the band intend to take their music on the road with a world TOUR which will see the Irish language and culture promoted abroad with a fusion of Irish culture, popular music, energy and masses of craic!
Keith explains ‘We are musicians with a grounded love for our culture and our language and we see an opportunity here to help bring it to the 21st century with style. We are driven and dedicated to bridging the gap between the power and presence of the Irish traditional style and the modern and fun popular beats that encapsulate the world!’
Daithí adds ‘when the button accordion, whistle and sax come together during those heavy-hitting, toe-tapping melodies, you really feel as if you are delving into a new and fresh brand of Irish cultural music. The passionate vocals and harmonies re-enforce the power of the voice in a sound that inspires positivity.’
The band have a long journey ahead of them but with backing from the Irish people they hope to make their dream a reality and do something that has never been done before. Kev concludes ‘Our hard work over the past two years has gotten us to this point and we are ready to take on a new challenge and we would really appreciate any contribution people could make, no matter how small’
