Attention all Community Volunteers – LEADER 2014-2020

Do you live or work in Rural Ireland?

Do you have ideas on how to support the development of your own community? Would you like to get directly involved in how funding decisions are made?

If your answer is yes then participation in a LEADER Local Action Group (LAG) might be for you!

Ranging from support for a start-up business that could generate economic activity and promote job creation to initiatives that make your area a more interesting place to live and visit, LEADER gives rural communities the resources to make a difference.

LEADER is delivered by groups of people known as Local Action Groups or LAGs. LAGs are made up of people who live and work in rural communities who come together to support the decision making process for the distribution of LEADER/ Rural Development Programme (RDP) funding in their area. The LEADER approach to community development positions LAGS as the agents of change for their areas and charges them with deciding what can be done to support the sustainable development of their own communities. LAGs do this through the design and implementation of a plan or Local Development Strategy over a 5-6 year time period.

The Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government (DECLG) has recently opened a call for expressions of interest for Local Action Groups to design and implement Local Development Strategies. We are now looking for people who are interested in participating in and/or forming Local Action Groups in their areas. These groups will then be supported to design a Local Development Strategy that best meets the needs of their area. If successful in the selection process, each strategy will provide a framework for the distribution of LEADER funding in any given area and its implementation will be supported over the next 5-6 years.

If this sounds like something you would be interested in being part of please come along to one of a series of regional LAG formation seminars, dates and venues outlined below. These seminars will outline the role and function of LAGS to anyone who is interested in participating. LAG participation is a significant commitment and these seminars will endeavour to ensure that anyone interested in participating is fully aware of the commitment required. Each seminar will also facilitate questions and answers regarding the LEADER elements of the RDP.
