7 MUNSTER TITLES FOR CLUB ATHLETES

Club athletes were in action at the Munster U/13 to U/19 Indoor Championships in Nenagh Indoor Stadium on Saturday 28th February & Sunday 1st March. It was a very productive weekend with Club athletes winning 12 medals in total (7 gold, 4 silver & 1 bronze) & a host of new personal bests. The Ryan siblings were certainly to the fore taking home 9 of the 12 medals for the Club. There was gold for Daniel in the Boys U/17 60mH, 60m & Shot Putt with the added bonus of a Munster record in the 60mH with his time of 8.24s. David won gold in the Boys U/16 60mH, Long Jump & Shot Putt to add to this Munster Pole Vault title won a few weeks ago & silver in the 60m. Their brother Jack won silver in the Boys U/15 Shot Putt & sister Anna won bronze in the Girls U/14 High Jump (she was also 4th in the Long Jump, 5th in the Shot Putt & 6th in the 60mH). Their younger brother Dillon also competed very well placing 7th in the Boys U/13 Long Jump, High Jump & Shot Putt. There was also gold for Liam McDonagh in the Boys U/15 Walk with silver medals for Ciara Mockler in the Girls U/19 Shot Putt & Declan Ryan in the Boys U/17 High Jump. Other athletes who performed very well but who were outside the medals were Shane Burke (7th in Boys U/15 Long Jump & 11th in 60m), Ben O’Dwyer (7th Boys U/16 1500m), Eimear Ryan (4th Girls U/17 Walk) & Adam O’Dwyer (11th in Boys U/14 800m & Shot Putt, 14th in Long Jump & 19th in 60m). All our medal winners will now compete at the National Juvenile Indoor Championships in AIT Arena, Athlone over the last two weekends in March & we wish them the very best of luck in their endeavours.

Good luck to all our athletes who will be taking part in the Munster U/9 to U/12 Indoor Championships in Nenagh Indoor Stadium on Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th March. Athletes who will be competing are Aoife Shelly (Girls U/9), Caitlin & Ciara Shelly (Girls U/10), Joe Egan (Boys U/11) & Laura Purcell (Girls U/12). Ben O’Dwyer also competes for his school, Thurles CBS at the GloHealth Irish Schools Cross Country Championships in Clane, Co. Kildare on Saturday 7th March & we wish him the very best of luck. Best of luck also to Daniel, David & Anna Ryan who will all be competing at the England Combined Events Championships in Sheffield on Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th March. Anna will take part in the Girls U/15 Pentathlon competition (60mH, LJ, HJ, Shot & 800m) on Sunday 15th with Daniel & David both competing in the Boys U/17 Heptathlon (60m, 60mH, LJ, HJ, PV, Shot & 1000m) over Saturday & Sunday.

2014 NATIONAL STAR AWARDS FOR DANIEL RYAN
Congratulations to Club athlete, Daniel Ryan who received the National Star Award for “Best Tipperary Athlete of 2014” for the second year at the Athletics Ireland National Star Awards Banquet held in the Tullamore Court Hotel on Saturday 28th February. Six Outstanding Awards are also presented annually to the top Irish Juvenile athletes & Daniel was also awarded one of these, the prestigious Bill Battersby Cup for “Outstanding Performances in the Long Jump”. In 2014 Daniel broke the National records in his age group both indoors & outdoors, won the Irish Schools Inter Boys Long Jump & represented Ireland at the SIAB Schools International winning bronze a year out of his age finishing the year as 6th best overall in the National Senior Outdoor Long Jump rankings. He has enjoyed great success last year winning a total of 12 National titles across a range of events & setting 5 new Munster records & 6 new National records. His 2014 Achievements – National Indoor Champion Boys U/16 60m, 60mH (NR 8.14), Long Jump (NR 6.58m) & Combined Events. National Outdoor Champion Boys U/16 100mH (NR 13.30), Long Jump (NR 6.49m), Discus & Combined Events. Irish Schools Champion in Inter Boys 100mH, Long Jump & Combined Events. SIAB Schools T&F bronze medallist in Long Jump, SIAB Schools Inter Boys Combined Events gold medallist. Celtic Games gold medal winner in Boys U/16 Hurdles (CR 13.58) & Mixed 4 x 100m Relay (CR 45.42). Daniel was also the recipient of a Munster Star Award for “Best Male Tipperary Athlete Indoors & Outdoors in 2014” in January. He also takes his place on the 2014 ARCU Irish Male Rankings list at #4 behind International athletes, Adam King, Karl Griffin & Eoin Sheridan. See more at www.arcurankings.com. CLUB TRAINING

Training for the Indoor Season takes place every Tuesday & Thursday evenings in the Moycarkey Community & Sports Centre in Littleton. Cost is 2 euro per athlete. Training sessions are split into two groups – 6.30pm to 7.30pm time slot is for athletes born 2007 and younger & 7.30pm to 8.30pm is for athletes born 2006 & older. New athletes & help always welcome.

UPCOMING COACHING SESSIONS

  • Wed 4th March – Sprints Workshop in Moyne Clubhouse from 7pm to 9pm. Workshop will be given by Paul Byrne. More information on our website at moycarkeycoolcrooac.com.
  • Fri 6th March – Jumps Workshop in Cork I.T. from 7pm to 9pm for Long Jump, High Jump & Pole Vault. Session will be given by Munster Performance Coaches, Stephen Fleming (LJ), Chris Regan (HJ) & Eamon Flanagan (PV).
  • Sat 14th March – Borrisokane AC will be hosting a squad session on Saturday 14th March. They invite all athletes and coaches in the county to attend. This session is open to all levels of athletes and is suitable for beginners so if you have an athlete who may have an interest in trying a new event please feel free to attend. Also please note the speed/technique portion of the day is suitable for both sprinters & endurance athletes. Session will start at 11.

  • Sat 4th April – The next session of the Munster Performance Squad will take place in Templemore Track on Saturday 4th April. Events covered on the day will be 100m, 200m, 400m, long hurdles, sprint hurdles, long jump, high jump, triple jump, pole vault, combined events, shot putt, discus, javelin & walks.  Training session will be from 10am to 12.30pm followed by a talk from International athlete, Niall Tuohy who will present his “Top Ten Tips” of Advice for leading Junior & Juvenile athletes. The session will finish at 1.30pm.
  • The Coaching & Development Calendar for the South West for February to May has been confirmed & is available on the Tipperary Athletics website at www.tipperaryathletics.com.

COUNTY TIPPERARY COMMUNITY GAMES XC TRIALS
The 2015 County Tipperary Community Games Cross Country Relay Trials will take place on Friday 10th April @ 7pm in Thurles Crokes A.C. Grounds. Entry on the night. Age groups are Girls & Boys U/12, U/13 & U/14 & all athletes must be under the age as of 31st July 2015. In order to take part, your Area must be affiliated. Please check with your Area Secretary beforehand to make sure you are eligible to compete. More details at www.tipperarycommunitygames.com. Please note that at the moment, no athletes are permitted to wear spikes.
