Post Office Proposals Another Attack On Rural Ireland – Martin Lonergan

Independent Local Election candidate for the Cahir/Clonmel Area, and a member of the Board of Muintir na Tíre, Martin Lonergan has condemned the proposed new partnership between An Post and Tesco which he feels will destroy the Irish Post Office network if it proceeds.

“This proposal, if it proceeds, will remove another basic service from local communities moving them into major out of town shopping centres. Basic An Post services are a requirement of our older and vulnerable members of our Communities on almost a daily basis. This proposal comes as many of the remaining postal sorting offices in rural towns and villages have transferred to larger centres,” commented Mr Lonergan.

“There is also the question of local jobs being lost from the communities concerned because as the current postal personnel retire, I fear that replacements will be by Staff from the large urban centres.  For communities that have already seen the loss of their local Garda Station and Banks and indeed in some cases, their local shop, this latest attack on basic supports for rural communities is a step too far and must be opposed by communities.”

Concluding Mr Lonergan said, “To sustain important services in our rural communities, and indeed the Post Office Network, the Government need to act immediately and put a plan in place that would see our Post Offices become more viable moving forward.”
