MEP Prendergast rules out independent candidacy for European Parliament

Labour MEP for Ireland South, Phil Prendergast, today sought to dispel reports that she would run as an Independent candidate for the forthcoming European elections should she fail to receive the backing of her party at its selection convention next month.

Ms. Prendergast is currently a Labour MEP for Ireland South and a member of the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament.

Speaking about the reports Ms. Prendergast said “I have spent the past month putting my case to the members, highlighting my record of achievement and outlining my vision for the future.

“I believe I am the best person for the job. I believe, and indeed my own research suggests, that if selected at convention I have the profile and experience to win this election.

“This is a democratic process and it is ultimately the members who will have the final say over who will lead the Labour ticket in Ireland South and I will respect whatever decision they make.”
