Morris offers his condolences on the death of Nenaghman Fr Alec Reid

I was saddened to hear of the passing this morning of Nenagh Man Fr Alec Reid. Fr Reid was hugely influential in the peace process in this country and it was because his ability to see  the whole process  through to the end that Nenagh Town Council awarded him a civic reception at my insistence. In fact the peace process wouldn’t have happened without Fr Reids determination to bring the warring sides together when the authorities North and South had a strategy of not talking to combatants

Gerry Adams who was a personal friend of Fr Reid described him as the “ Pastor to the peace process”.

In the last few weeks I had been gathering photographs of his youth in Nenagh(including Hurling photographs of his time as a Nenagh Eire Og player) for a book that is been written about this remarkable man . He is a huge loss to his Family Colleagues and friends but his legacy will live on forever.

Yours sincerely Cllr. Séamie Morris 22/11/13
