Beatle Mal – The 5th or even 6th Beatle? The Source Arts Centre

He was the shadow that appeared behind the act you’ve known for all these years. Beatle MAL is a touching and funny one-man play about the Beatles closest friend, roadie Mal Evans. 50 years ago, in the autumn of 1963 the Beatles were on a tour that would see for the first time ‘Beatlemania’ unleashed on every town and city, they went. The Beatles performed in Dublin on 7th November and a near riot was caused in the fervour of fans desperate to see the Fab Four.

Mal Evans was there, as not just Beatles roadie, but also their closest friend. The bespectacled gentle giant was always a friendly and calming presence in the background. He toured the world with them, took part on their recording sessions and films. He was there when they met Bob Dylan and Elvis. He was their protector when their lives were threatened in the Philippines and present when they studied with Maharishi in India. He even lived with Paul McCartney as his housekeeper in 1967 and there is good reason to believe he helped write the title song of ‘Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts’ Club Band.

The play contrasts Mal’s life with the Beatles with his domestic life, the two families that he had. Actor Nik Wood-Jones brings Mal back to life in this very  touching and funny show which premiered in 2012 at the world famous Cavern Club in Liverpool before a successful three week run at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Performer and writer of the show Nik Wood-Jones from Manchester is best known for playing English Lake District writer Alfred Wainwright, first appearing as him in the film, ‘The Man Who Loved the Lakes’ (2007). He also played Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh in ‘On Raglan Road’ &

This show is jointly produced by Mermaid Tavern and IRISH THEATRE PRESENTS.
