Watch the Sunrise from the summit of Galtymore

Tipperary’s, Galtymore mountain has been selected as one of 10 Irish mountain locations to feature in the 2013 Sunrise Summit Challenge, taking place on April 14th.  Hikers, adventurers and families of all levels of experience are invited to take part in the Irish Red Cross charity event in which they will hike through the early morning darkness, reaching the mountain summits in time to watch the sunrise over Lake Diheen.

Vikki Walshe, Sunrise Summit Coordinator, says, “Galtymore is the perfect type of mountain for this challenge event as it offers a suitably challenging hike followed by rewarding spectacular views.”

With commanding views over the entire south-east of the country, Galtymore stands at 919 meters. The initial boggy trail makes way for a steep summit approach over red sandstone and conglomerate bedrock.  Legend has it that it is inhabited by a snake banished there by St. Patrick.

The Sunrise Summit Challenge offers a unique opportunity to take part in an unforgettable mountain adventure whilst also raising funds for the Irish Red Cross’ humanitarian work in Ireland and around the world. The April 14th event, which will simultaneously take place at ten mountain locations across Ireland, will be led by fully trained Irish Red Cross mountain guides.
