Dancing and Hurling at The Source Arts Centre? You better believe it!

The Source Arts Centre is delighted to welcome Dance Artist Cathy O’Kennedy of Fluxusdance as its Dance Artist in Residence for 2012/2013. The Source Arts Centre secured funding for the residency under The Arts Council’s Dance Artist in Residency Scheme. The residency will give the people of Thurles and Co. Tipperary a unique opportunity to work with a highly experienced choreographer, dancer and teacher on a unique community dance project. Not only that, but this particular choreographer has a strong link with the GAA also.

Cathy O’Kennedy was inspired by her grandfather, Wexford hurler Seán O’Kennedy, captain of the winning Wexford team from 1914 to 1918, to devise a dance piece based on Gaelic games. ‘The Divine Normal’ was created by Fluxusdance as a site-specific dance event at Croke Park and was performed there on the hurling, football and camogie finals days in 2005. ‘The Divine Normal’ draws on the creative and dynamic opportunities inherent to Gaelic Games, and the personal and social histories connected to the community ownership of the games. It was created with input from GAA legend Michael O’Muircheartaigh and with commissioned music by John Spillane.

The Source Arts Centre Community Dance Residency Project is designed to allow for maximum participation by community groups and individuals in dance making, dance learning and dance performance. The project links traditional Irish sports with dance which is particularly relevant in the context of Thurles European Town of Sport 2012.

The workshops and classes which begin on Friday 7th September will culminate in an opportunity for the community performers to perform their dances with the artists of Fluxusdance at The Source Arts Centre. Fluxusdance is known for its commitment to inclusive dance practices, bringing the best professional practice in the field to people of all ages and abilities.

If you want to DANCE, PERFORM and LEARN about dance this is the project for YOU. Please get in touch with Box Office at 0504 90204 or Carmel at 0504 90340 for further details.
