ELECTRIC IRELAND ALL IRELAND MINOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Commiserations to the Tipperary minor footballers on their defeat by Mayo on a scoreline of 0-19 to 1-8 in last Saturday’s Electric Ireland All Ireland minor football championship quarter final at Croke Park. Mayo fully deserved their victory on the day but all Tipperarysupporters can be very proud of the way this year’s minor football team has represented the county. Things did not go their way on Saturday but securing the Munster championship for the second year in a row was a fine achievement and many of these players will go on to represent the county with distinction at under 21 and senior level. Great thanks are due to Manager, David Power and his selectors Tadhg Duggan, Kevin Mulryan and Pat Murphy, coaches Alan O’Connor and Paddy O’Flaherty and all the backroom team who worked so hard and successfully with these players.

Based at Lar na Pairce, there will be an opportunity for supporters to ring in and pledge their €100 to one of the special guests who will be answering the phones. Details will be available on the Tipperary website and on local radio before Saturday. In the meantime anybody wishing to donate €100 can contact the GAA Office in Thurles at 0504 22702. We are appealing to the generosity of supporters who are in a position to make a donation to do so in the interests of maximising the chances of success for our teams in the remainder of 2012 and on into 2013. MAURICE DAVIN MEMORIAL FUND

Maurice Davin from Carrick-on-Suir was one of the GAA’s founders and attended the meeting which set up the GAA at Hayes Hotel, Thurles on November 1 1884. He was the GAA’s first president and played a leading role in building the fledgling organisation. The Maurice Davin Memorial Committee was founded to spearhead the development and erection of a statue of Maurice Davin in Carrick-on-Suir and to hold major festivities to honour him. The Committee were delighted with the recent news that the South Tipperary Development Company has sanctioned grant aid of €44,000 to assist in the development of the statue and the organisation of the festivities. The total cost of the memorial and festivities will be in the region of €75,000 and as a result there is a significant shortfall of funding.  The Committee are appealing to the generosity of clubs and supporters inTipperary and beyond in the hope that they will donate towards the funding to ensure that this major cultural and historical figure is honoured in the appropriate manner.  Any donation would be greatly appreciated no matter how small.  It is planned that there will be a weekend of festivities in Carrick-on-Suir which will include an inter county hurling match, juvenile matches, hand ball matches, etc in the Davin Park.  There will be an exhibition of photographs memorabilia honouring players of the past and celebrating the GAA, together with a celebration of the achievements of culture and historical importance of Maurice Davin.  The event will carry national and international media attention.  The festivities will take place in Carrick-on-Suir on the Bank Holiday Weekend, Friday, June 1, 2013 to Sunday, June 3 2013 in conjunction with The Clancy Brothers Festival which will take place also on that weekend. President Michael D Higgins has been formally invited to officially unveil the memorial statue and launch the exhibition.  Donations can be made to the Maurice Davin Memorial Fund either by electronic transfer or a cheque payment.  The Committee understand that funding is tight in these times for all clubs and supporters and but they would be more than thankful for any financial support that is offered. Bank Account Details: Account Name: Maurice Davin Memorial Fund; Bank: Bank Of Ireland, Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary; Sort Code: 90-59-69; Account No: 94389749
