The Source Arts Centre’s Community Dance project 2012/2013
The Source is delighted to announce with thanks to funding from the Arts Council of Ireland, a dance artist in residency will oversee a fantastic community dance project at The Source Arts Centre for 2012 and 2013.The Fluxusdance ‘Divine Normal’ community dance residency project is designed to allow for maximum participation by community groups and individuals in Dance-Making, Dance-Learning and Dance Performance. The project links traditional Irish sports with dance which is particularly relevant in the context of Thurles European Town of Sport 2012.
This community dance project will be based on the excitement and physical endurance of Gaelic Games and was created by Fluxusdance as a site-specific dance event at Croke Park and was performed there on the hurling, football and camogie finals days in 2005. Professional dancer Cathy O’Kennedy was inspired by her grandfather, Wexford hurler Seán O’Kennedy, captain of the winning Wexford team from 1914 to 1918.
‘The Divine Normal’ draws on the dynamic, social and personal histories connected to the community ownership of the GAA, and was created with input from Michael O’Muircheartaigh and specially commissioned music by John Spillane.
Introductory workshops for community groups will take place on 7th & 8th and 14th & 15th September with the first event ‘show and tell’ dance performance based on ‘The Divine Normal’ linking in with Culture Night on 21st September at The Source Arts Centre.
In early 2013, the next phase of the project will involve dance in education projects with rural primary schools, transition year students, adults and children with special needs as well as local community groups. These workshops will also culminate in an exciting performance event. If you want to DANCE, PERFORM and LEARN about dance this is the project for YOU!
Performance focused community events would ideally include all age groups to fully represent the community. These can also include workshops in schools (primary and secondary) and community contexts (afterschool/youth dance) and adults (evening classes, disability groups, active retirement groups).
Bookings are now taking place, please ring Carmel on 0504 90340 for more information.
