Tenders Invited for €16.7m Burncourt & Fethard Water Treatment Plants

Mr. Phil Hogan, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, has today ( 10 July, 2012), given approval to South Tipperary County Council to invite tenders for the construction of Water Treatment Plants in Burncourt & Fethard which are critical elements of the Regional Water Supply Scheme for both of these towns.  The Burncourt & Fethard Regional Water Supply Schemes are being funded under his Department’s Water Services Investment Programme at a current estimated cost of €16.7 m.

The proposed works in Burncourt & Fethard will include the construction of new water treatment plants, new service reservoirs, the development of existing and new water sources and ancillary services.  The Council are also proposing some improvements to the water distribution networks in the towns and schemes concerned and this is currently at planning.

“The objective of the Burncourt and Fethard schemes is to produce good drinking water, provide adequate storage and ensure that the distribution system is adequate to supply the whole region,” the Minister said.   He added “These schemes will greatly improve the quality and reliability of the water supply serving large areas of South Tipperary and will provide a much better level of service to all current residential and commercial consumers, as well as setting a platform for development in the future.”

The Minister pointed out that his approval of the contract documents now clears the way for South Tipperary County Council to seek tenders for the new treatment plants, pumping stations and associated ancillary works. .

“Given the importance of the Burncourt and Fethard schemes for the region, I will be urging South Tipperary County Council to seek tenders at the earliest possible date with a view to getting a contractor on site without delay”, the Minister added.
