Pedal Power Lights up the Roads of Tipperary
On the weekend of the 18th and 19th of August, hundreds of cyclists will take to their bikes in Tipperary to support the work of NCBI (the national sight loss organisation). This will be the 17th year that NCBI’s “Trip to Tipp” will attract keen cyclists from all over Ireland to travel the roads of Tipperary for a worthy cause.
This annual event is organised by Thurles man, Billy Shanahan. Billy has said on this year’s event “We have been growing this year and year and this year will be the biggest and most successful “Trip to Tipp” to date” Billy is himself blind from early childhood. He has raised funds for NCBI through his participation in cycle events in different parts of the world. Billy will participate in the “Trip to Tipp” on his tandem bicycle.
NCBI’s CEO, Des Kenny, says of Billy Shanahan,
“He is a phenomenal cyclist who has tackled some of the most difficult legs of the Tour-de-France routes in the Pyrenees and Alps where it takes great courage to travel steep climbs and fast descents on the back of a tandem. All of Billy’s cycles have been personal challenges in which he has set tremendous examples of what can be done by people who are blind or severely vision impaired, and he has done this while raising funds for those less able than himself.”
Date: Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th August
Cost of entry: €40 (€20 for family fun cycle)
There are different cycle routes to choose from:
- Saturday 18th August: 70km ‘Three Counties Tour’ commencing at 1pm.
- Sunday 19th August: 180km route , commencing at 9am.
- Sunday 19th August: 100km route commencing at 10.30am.
- Sunday 19th August: 70km route commencing at 10.30am.
Entry for all four of the above cycles costs €40 which includes an official Trip to Tipp Cycling Shirt (designed by Spin 11), Refreshments and a Certificate of Completion.
As always, there will be the 20km Family Fun Cycle taking place this year on Sunday 19th August at 11:30am. Cost of entry to this cycle is €20 and all participants will receive a t-shirt, refreshments and a certificate of completion.
All cycles depart from the Anner Hotel in Thurles, Co Tipperary.
- NCBI, the national sight loss agency, is a not-for-profit organisation which provides information, advice, support, rehabilitation services and other training designed to assist people who are living with sight loss to do so independently.
- About 5 percent of people using our services are completely blind, while 95 percent have varying degrees of usable vision.
- There are over 16,500 people who are blind or vision impaired on NCBI’s database.
