Lough Derg RNLI Lifeboat was launched to assist six persons aboard a cruiser that had run aground in heavy weather.

On Saturday afternoon, June 30, Lough Derg RNLI lifeboat was launched following a request by Valentia Coast Guard to assist six persons on board a crusier that had grounded off Youghal Bay, on the eastern shore of Lough Derg. At 15.04hrs, the lifeboat launched with Helm Colin Knight, Ger Egan and Tom Dunne on board. Winds were southwesterly, Force 6, gusting 7, visibility was good.

When the lifeboat arrived on scene, they found all persons on board and safe and unharmed.  The vessel had fouled its propellers and whilst the skipper and his crew were attempting to cut lines and free it, they were pushed onto rocks and grounded. They had not dropped anchor. An RNLI crew member boarded the vessel and established that it was not holed.  It was then taken off the rocks and towed into Dromineer.

The Lifeboat returned to station and was ready for service again at 16.00hrs.
