50 Jobs for Borrisokane – Duncan Stewart to launch new initiative
Renowned broadcaster Duncan Stewart, producer of RTE’s series ‘About the House’ and ‘Eco Eye’ will be visiting Borrisokane on Saturday, 14th of July to formally launch the Borrisokane LocalSwitch Association (LSA) InfoPoint at the junction of Main Street and Town Park Road at 2pm.
Borrisokane LSA in association with LocalSwitch Ireland, a not-for-profit national charity – have the goal of creating 50 jobs in Borrisokane within 5 years. This will be achieved through the establishment of new enterprises and the towns citizens directing their spending power locally.
Michael Newham, director with LocalSwitch commented “Every community has the resources in their town and hinterland to create multiple jobs through wood-fuel delivery, electricity generation, food production and other primary products. The business model we’d like to promote in conjunction with Borrisokane LSA is that of ‘Community Owned Infrastructure’ – whereby the towns citizens aim to replace costly imports such as heating oil and processed food with job producing, cost reducing alternatives”.
“We have now identified 16 businesses which can be created on the back of locally owned infrastructure and aim to start rolling these out as early as this October. Over the coming weeks we’ll be visiting many households, businesses and food producers to conduct an energy audit and needs analysis. Based on the results of this in-depth survey, opportunities for new businesses will be identified”.
Locals Donna McLoughlin, Miriam Lewis and James Haugh (all founding members of Borrisokane LSA) warmly invite folk to a reception at the InfoPoint at 2pm on Saturday the 14th where more details will be revealed on this exciting new job strategy for the town.
