Pieta Mid-West Calls for Volunteers

Suicide and self-harm crisis centre, Pieta House Mid-West is the only organisation in the Mid-West region providing a professional, face to face, free of charge therapeutic service for people in the acute stages of distress. Since opening in December 2010 Pieta Mid-West has seen almost 400 people who are in the acute stages of distress.

80% of Pieta House’s income comes from fundraising events and the organisation is heavily reliant on the support of volunteers and friends of Pieta House. Pieta Mid-West is now seeking volunteers and fundraisers for 2012. Well-known local community volunteer, Kieran O’Brien has recently been appointed as Fundraising and Volunteering Co-Ordinator with Pieta Mid-West and is asking the people of the Mid-West to volunteer their time for Pieta House.

“The services provided by Pieta House are so important to the people of the Mid-West region; no other organisation provides services to people in the acute stages of distress. We’re now inviting people to sign up as volunteers and fundraisers for this year,” said Kieran O’Brien, Fundraising and Volunteer Co-Coordinator, Pieta House Mid-West. “Even an hour’s commitment per week will make a big difference,” he said.

The primary aim of Pieta House is to reduce suicide by helping people get through that critical phase when suicide becomes a plan rather than just an idea, and demand is constantly on the rise for the services provided by Pieta House.

“We’re so grateful for the support from the local community as this support is so important in maintaining Pieta Mid-West,” said Joan Freeman, CEO and founder of Pieta House. “We’re delighted to have Kieran O’Brien on board to co-ordinate our fundraisers and volunteers. Kieran is a real community champion and we’re delighted he’ll be using his experience and enthusiasm to help Pieta Mid-West,” she said.

Pieta House was founded by Joan Freeman, a practising psychologist, who closed down her own counselling business eight years ago to dedicate her time to finding out how she could help people who were suicidal.
